MENT For You
Bradley S. and Krista W. The Star City High School EAST lab is beginning its second year of the mentoring program for students. This mentoring program is designed to help prevent teens from dropping out of school which is becoming an increasing problem in our state. The students working on this project attended the 4th Annual Arkansas Safe School Conference in North Little Rock in 2008. The EAST lab, in collaboration with the Criminal Justice Institute of the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, began a mentoring program with the elementary students called “MENT for you.” This mentoring program will consist of high school students visiting elementary students and helping students stay focused on school work and establishing a one-on-one relationship with them. The EAST students are hopeful they will be able to help students understand the benefits of graduating from high school and the consequences of dropping out. The mentoring with the Elementary students began in December and so far has been has a huge success.

Virtual Reality The virtual reality group has worked the past several weeks to take pictures of every room in the Star City High School. They plan to use these pictures to create a virtual tour of the school. The tour will then be made available to parents who are considering enrolling their students in the SCHS school system. It will also be distributed to local law enforcement and emergency centers so that they might react with a greater knowledge of the schools layout in the case of an emergency. Exercise/ Obesity This project is intended to help children understand
and try to prevent obesity. We are planning on going to Star City
Elementary School (JBE) to present our statistics, facts, and other
information about our project. Our main focus is 1st grade. We feel this
grade is most compatible with our project plans. Children these days are
bigger than they have been in the past, and we’re trying to prevent that

Backpack Project The backpack project is working to provoke awareness amongst parents and students in the elementary school about the importance of backpack safety. The team members hope to help their audience realize the damage that may be inflicted by improperly carrying a backpack. The group also wishes to inform the students of the appropriate weight for a pack. Allison H., Julie C., and Darby W.
Teen Issues This project is directed towards addressing issues commonly found in the lives of teens. The issues range from peer pressure and drug abuse to problems in the school environment. Kayla B. and Alex C.
Book Reading This project will benefit the second graders by
teaching them the importance of why reading is really important read and
to enjoy it. Also let them and their parents know that once reading at a
younger age it will increase their: vocabulary, speech, the
understanding of words, hand-and- eye
Coordination, and
even open doors for them in the future.

Dating Abuse This project is intended to help decrease the frequency of the occurrence of dating abuse. The members hope to increase awareness of the issue that has become somewhat of a silent epidemic. Self-Defense
In our project we plan to teach students and
the Star City community how to defend
themselves. We are teaching a free class on
self defense and the instructor for the
class is Earnest Bright. The class will be
open to anyone in the community and will be
held at the Civic Center. We also are
reading the book “Defensive Living” so we
can help teach the classes.

Steroids The project will consist of research and once that is complete, the project can start moving forward. We will begin by putting our information into a PowerPoint. After that we can create a website. Sometime during this project we will learn Final Cut Pro software so we can create our video. I am excited to see where this project can go!

Internet Safety The purpose of this project is to inform others of the dangers of the internet. We are mainly focusing on the fourth and fifth graders of Jimmy Brown Elementary. We want to teach students how to responsibly and safely use the internet. We are also planning a parent night so we can make parents aware of the dangers their children could come in contact with online. We are making brochures, a poster, a PowerPoint and movie clip for students, and a PowerPoint and movie clip for parents. We will contact a police officer for a collaborator. First period’s internet safety team is collaborating with us. Our project will lower the amount of crime online.
